LIKE FATHER LIKE SON LIKE GRANDSON
After a couple of disruptive years caused by Covid and other issues, Boston Spa Hockey Club is re launching its junior training sessions from Sunday 6th November 2022. But this is only part of a nearly 50 year family story.
The late John Mawson was a very successful hockey player at Boston Spa and having a young family in the 1970’s decided to introduce hockey to not just his son Jonathan but all his friends. So in 1975 the forward thinking John set up a junior indoor training night which proved to be a great success. This ran successfully until 1998 when the then Boston Spa High School had an Astro turf pitch installed. At this point, a now adult Jonathan joined his father to create the very successful Sunday morning Junior training.
As the years continued Jonathan took more of the training and got formal Hockey Association training qualifications. As is the way with the Mawson family, within only a few years all Jonathans children attended and his oldest son Richard took on roles of training and helping along with his grandfather. Eventually there came a time when John stepped down and Jonathan took over, but even as an 86 year old John could not be kept away from his passion and often called up ‘To see how it was going’.
As with so many things this training was stopped by Covid. It is fitting that it is Richard Mawson, now a teacher at Boston Spa Academy, who is now the driving force behind the re launch of this Sunday morning ritual, which has over the years has given such fun and pleasure to so many whilst also creating a high number of very accomplished hockey players. There is still 1 player from the original Junior training who still plays to this day.
Junior hockey training will be held at Boston Spa Academy Astro turf pitch on Sunday mornings from 10-12am from 6th November and is open to any juniors aged 8-16 years. It is about having a fun time whilst learning or improving hockey skills. All trainers are DBS registered and the cost is only £3 per session per attendee.
